Handwoven May/June 2023 Call for Submissions: Color-and-Weave!

I got into some hot water one time when I said that as a new weaver I was disappointed to find out that color-and-weave wasn’t really about color at all. I was trying to explain (poorly, I admit) how confusing it had been for me to look at a book or articles about color-and-weave only to find drafts and often fabrics that were black, white, and gray. It wasn’t until much later that I learned color-and-weave is about the interplay of warp values with weft values and the patterns created by those values that aren’t necessarily those created by the weave structure. Often there is a dark and light value in the warp and the same or similar light and dark values in the weft. It’s the designer’s job to pick colors with values that will make the color-and-weave pattern emerge.

Today with so many designing resources and beautiful yarns available to us as weavers, color-and-weave seems to have no limits. For the May/June 2023 issue, I’m hoping to see projects proposed that break the “rules” around color-and-weave, whether it’s 2-shaft log cabin, multi-shaft shadow weave, the many twill color-and-weave variations, huck lace, or other structures I’m not aware of that can create color-and-weave effects. Let’s do this!

Let’s have some fun with color-and-weave! For this issue, we are interested in projects and articles about the many different types of color-and-weave fabrics, whether they are two-block log cabin, multiple-block shadow weave, or classic repeating patterns such as houndstooth twill.

Please note that we have changed our submission process and are also using a new submission form. We base our project selections for each issue on contributor photographs. We will review the proposals and ask for additional photographs if needed, to be sent in by the end of September 2022 for this issue. After the project-selection meeting, we will contact everyone whose project is accepted and ask that it be submitted along with the project paperwork.

Submissions in the form of photographs and article outlines due: 09/11/2022
Final submissions, including projects and paperwork, due: 10/31/22
