Ask Madelyn: Using a Sectional Beam without Warping Sectionally

I purchased a Baby Wolf in June that has a sectional back beam. I beamed one warp back to front, and the threads kept catching on the pegs. How can I use this beam without warping sectionally?

Hi Michaela!

I had the same problem with my very first loom. It had wooden pegs that were about 3/16" in diameter. I warp front to back, so I did not use a raddle, and as I wound the warp onto the beam, some threads would catch on the pegs and others would fall into the spaces on either side of the pegs. It was a mess!

I made a raddle using a board and finishing nails. The pegs in the sectional beam were 2" apart, so I placed the nails at every 1¾" and then ¼" as shown below. I then spread the warp in the raddle using only the 1¾" spaces.

For the Baby Wolf, you’ll have to figure out some way to clamp the raddle on top of that slanted back beam.
